• Developed finite volume code of newman’s thermo-electrochemical model coupled with physics-based Li-plating
• Identified thermally activated voltage rebound during fast charge to increase SOC and prevent excess Li-plating
• Experimentally subjected coin cells to fast-charging and analyzed their cycle-life and modes of degradation
• Analysis revealed Li-plating is predominantly anode-centric but cathode co-dependent phenomenon.
• Simulations reveal that smaller particles and film-like secondary phase morphology delay the onset of Li-plating.
